Northern European B2C e-commerce turnover grows over 13%

The Northern European B2C e-commerce sales growth rate was 13.5% in 2014, which represents an increase compared to the 10.9% of the preceding year. As a result, online sales in Northern Europe amounted to € 34.7bn; this leads to Northern Europe being the continent’s fourth-largest B2C e-commerce region. For 2015, the growth rate is expected to decline a bit, as a growth of 12.8% is forecasted. This still means the Northern turnover will increase to almost € 40bn.

This is evident from the Northern European B2C E-commerce Report 2015 that Ecommerce Europe has published in cooperation with the Ecommerce Foundation. In addition, the report is powered by GfK, Global Collect|Ingenico and Asendia.

Within Northern Europe, Denmark has the largest B2C e-commerce market, with an online B2C turnover of € 9.9bn. It is followed by Sweden with € 8.9bn, Norway with € 8.3bn and Finland with € 6.6bn. Danish e-shoppers are the region’s biggest spenders. With an average spending per e-shopper of € 2,721 in 2014, Denmark completes the top five of average spending in Europe. Within Northern Europe, Norwegian e-shoppers follow closely with an average spending of € 2,608, followed by Finland with € 2,145.

The share of B2C e-commerce in the Gross Domestic Country, or eGDP, is also a good indicator of the importance of B2C e-commerce within a country or region. With an eGDP of 2.55%, Northern Europe ranks second in all European regions. It is interesting to see that this rate has increased by 50% since 2009, which demonstrates that e-commerce within the Northern European economy is becoming more and more important.
