Western European B2C e-commerce turnover grows to nearly € 210bn

B2C e-commerce sales continue to increase significantly in Western Europe. In 2014, this growth amounted to 13.3%, resulting in a total B2C e-commerce turnover of € 209.9bn. In comparison, in the preceding year, Western European online sales grew by 13.7% and for 2015 an increase of 12.5% is expected. As a result, Western Europe remains Europe’s largest B2C e-commerce region.

This is evident from the Western European B2C E-commerce Report that Ecommerce Europe has published in cooperation with the Ecommerce Foundation. In addition, the report is powered by GfK, Global Collect|Ingenico and Asendia.

Within Western Europe, the United Kingdom is the largest B2C e-commerce market, with an online B2C turnover of € 127.2bn. It is followed by France with € 56.8bn and the Netherlands with € 14.0bn. In addition, British e-shoppers are the region’s biggest spenders. With an average spending per e-shopper of € 3,073 in 2014, the UK even ranked first on a global scale. Within Western Europe, Irish e-shoppers rank second, with an average spending of € 2,967, followed by France, at quite a distance, with € 1,600.

The share of B2C e-commerce in the Gross Domestic Country, or eGDP, is also a good indicator of the importance of B2C e-commerce within a country or region. With an eGDP of 3.73%, Western Europe ranks at the top of all European regions. It is interesting to see that this rate has nearly doubled since 2009, which shows that the role of e-commerce within the Western European economy is becoming more and more important.
