On 14 September, Ecommerce Europe issued its series of recommendations on the European Parliament’s own-initiative report on addictive design of online services and consumer protection in the EU single market. Through this paper we call on the EU policymakers to be mindful of the different aspects of the online environment and that a one-size-fits-all approach would negatively impact all online businesses.

We would highlight that:

  1.  Behavioural design and personalisation are not one and the same as addictive design.
  2.  Recommendations often help users spend less time online and improve their experiences.
  3. The Digital Services Act and the Better Internet for Children Strategy set out policy rules and goals that will protect minors and users online.
