Joint industry statement on Google Search and Article 6.5 of the Digital Markets Act

On 6 March, Ecommerce Europe co-signed, together with other likeminded industry associations representing the airline, hospitality and retail sectors active in the European Union, a joint statement on the proposed changes by Alphabet to Google Search in relation to Article 6(5) of the Digital Markets Act.

The changes proposed do not ensure a level playing field among all market participants, nor do they work towards offering the best options to consumers. We express concern with the proposed changes as they might lead to situations where the economic power of large online intermediaries is further entrenched and where consumers are not presented with a variety of choices.

In our statement, we call for:

  • Expeditious communication on the changes from Google
  • Alphabet to not reduce visibility of organic results of direct suppliers and merchants on Google Search
  • The Commission to monitor the implementation and set up an independent system which will measure the impact on business users
