Recommendations for a digital transition for consumer information

Today, the Digital Consumer Information Alliance (DCIA), which brings together Ecommerce Europe and trade associations across different sectors, technologies and products, is launching its new manifesto.

The manifesto reiterates the DCIA’s call on policymakers to adopt a coordinated approach to product information by digital means that would work for all, consumers and economic operators alike, including SMEs.The approach should ensure that each economic operator’s role, as laid down in the EU acquis, is respected throughout the supply chain. Our coalition calls policymakers’ attention to the urgent need for a harmonised, consistent, and forward-looking approach to consumer information through digital means.

The DCIA puts forward concrete recommendations for a digital transition for consumer information, including:

  • One Product, One EU Data Carrier
  • Interoperability and machine-readable data
  • Technological neutrality that leaves room for innovation
  • Digitalisation of certain mandatory information
  • Proportionate implementation and sufficient transition periods
  • Avoiding further fragmentation through divergent national approaches

The Alliance therefore calls on the European Commission to support the development of a harmonised legislative framework that integrates digital labelling as a reliable and environmentally conscious alternative to physical labelling. Such a framework should be future-proof and not preclude the technical nature of digital means.
